What Is Church Planter Coaching?
“Coaches help people develop their God-given potential so they can grow personally and make a valuable contribution to the Kingdom of God…coaching is the hands-on process of helping people succeed.” (Steve Ogne)
Coaching is a relational and intentional process that empowers leaders to discover where God is working in their life and ministry, discern opportunities and develop action steps to see God’s agenda become reality.
Why is Church Planter Coaching So Powerful?
Coaches help people discover where they best fit and flourish and grow personally, gain skills and perform at a higher level, live with greater sense of purpose and make their ultimate contribution to the Kingdom of God.
Studies and stories show the power of coaching:
- Coaching increases the value of training by 400%, helping people put into practice what they’ve learned four times more effectively.
- Coaching is a key factor for churches in the missional health process and church planting success. Denominations that have intentional systems for assessing, coaching and training have seen success rates for new churches rise from 30-50% to 80-90%.
- Stories from leaders who have greatly benefitted from being coached abound. Here is a common testimony: “I’ve planted a church without a coach and planted with a coach…and I’ll never plant a church again without a coach!”
Why does a church planter need a coach?
Planting a church is complex. There are many issues that need to be addressed, and milestones that need to be reached in order for a church plant to be successful. A coach will walk beside the planter, setting goals to reach those milestones, creating action steps to move forward, and ensuring that all the important facets of church planting are covered. (The main guide for the coaching relationship will be the "11 Essential Areas of Planting a Church" attached below.) A coach also offers a safe place for the planter, where struggles can be talked through.
