SERVICE CREDENTIALS: change to certificate of ordination

Whereas, Discipline 3089:2 specifies that an ordained minister's credentials shall consist of the certificate of ordination and an annual pocket certificate of standing issued and signed by the district secretary;

Whereas, Discipline 3059:4b specifies that a commissioned minister's credentials shall consist of the commission certificate and an annual pocket certificate of standing, issued and signed by the district secretary;

Whereas, When ministers surrender their credentials, they frequently indicate they cannot find their original certificate;

Whereas, A minister may subsequently find the certificate and presents it to another religious body for recognition as an ordained or commissioned minister; and

Whereas, It is incumbent upon The Wesleyan Church as the body which has received surrendered credentials to prevent misuse or abuse of a non-surrendered ordination or commission certificate;

Resolved, That paragraphs 6280 and 6300 of The Discipline be edited by placing the following statement on the certificates of ordination or commission:

"This certificate is valid only when accompanied by a currently dated pocket certificate of standing."
